A day in the life of a Trainee Site Manager

Max Owen

Trainee Site Manager

Max joined us in May 2017 as part of our academy programme. Starting over at our Greenwich Peninsula site with our sister company harrisonJorge, Max subsequently moved over to our fireclad site at Chelsea Barracks, where we are completing the drylining package works to the apartments.

Max works as part of our site team and has really grown – both in experience and confidence – into the role. He has also been working really hard academically in his studies for his HNC, achieving 5 distinctions in his 2nd year.  Below is his story.

Who or what inspired you to get into construction?

The ever-changing scenarios you can face on a daily basis was a definite factor into what guided me towards a career in construction. Especially with fireclad there are plenty of opportunities to engage in a wide-range of roles across a variety of different projects and locations.

The completion element of construction is something that has always interested me. It’s great when you are able to see the finished product – the hard work that has been put in by all the team is there for everyone to see.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

Finishing a project! It’s really satisfying. With all the hard work that has gone into the Chelsea Barracks project for example, with the fantastic team we have, it is great to see it coming towards the end. Through the various stages that we have all been part of, and speaking to friends and family about my involvement in this iconic development that will be there for years to come feels really good.

What is it like working on this iconic project? We can imagine its pretty hectic!

It certainly has been! The team we have here are brilliant and through the sheer hard work and determination of everyone involved we are nearly there.

You are studying for your HNC Construction. How have you coped juggling work and study?

Thankfully I have adapted to college life quite well, although it can be tough at times juggling the workload on a busy project and a lot of college work! Thankfully, and with support from my colleagues,  I have somehow been able to get the balance right!

Your results last year were exceptional  you must have been thrilled?

Yes, I was really pleased with my results last year (Max achieved 5 distinctions) especially given it was my first real insight into the bigger side of construction. It is a great opportunity to see the wider perspective of construction and has really helped to broaden my view to both my job and how our role coincides with other trades.

What was your favourite subject at school?

Business studies! I figured it may help one day!

What advice would you give potential candidates looking to join us?

With fireclad being part of the wider Adparo Group, you really do get plenty of opportunity to grow and learn. You get support to help you achieve your qualifications, as well as other appropriate training. Everyone is really approachable and friendly – you don’t feel like just another number – and they really want you to do well. I’d definitely recommend anyone looking to join to give it a go – you won’t regret it.
