  • Project: UAL Central St Martins, Kings Cross
  • Client: UAL
  • Architect: Pringle Brandon
  • Project Value: £800K

This £200 million project was completed in August 2011 and is now home of up to 5,000 students and 1,000 staff members. The concept of the project was to bring together many disciplines of the arts under one roof to create a design city within the City. The Granary building has been located on the site since 1851 and was used to store grain before it was transported into the City of London. Either side of the main building are two transit sheds each running parallel to the main building and equalling the 180 metre length. Two new buildings have been constructed and these form the link to the existing refurbished buildings now providing 3200m2 of accommodation and study areas.

The courses catered for at the college are now diverse and numerous and include classes in photography, ceramic design, jewellery and textile design, architecture, animation, acting and directing of the performing arts.

The value of the Fireclad element of work was £800k and we were tasked with sourcing and installing a high quality ply lining to the sloping soffits of the upper levels of the buildings. The ply sheeting also provided a flexible and raw solution to form and line the many different studios, cores and corridors. The material was dipped to provide a 60 minute fire rating and was sourced from a London-based supplier who was able to provide all the appropriate FSC certification. Our works were managed by a team of 3 experienced staff members ensuring our team of up to 35 directly employed London based carpenters and dry wall fixers delivered the finishes to the required high quality in sequence and on programme.

To help achieve this Fireclad worked closely with the architectural design team and Overbury management in highlighting potential problems before they became more difficult issues to overcome.

A year after completion we were recalled to deal with 2 minor items of cracking to satisfy our 12 month defect liability.
